Backbone JS is a framework of Javascript with a RESTful and JSON interface. It is primarily used for building single-page web applications. It is based on model-view-presenter (MVP) model. It is a lightweight framework as its only dependency is on one Javascript library, Underscore.js.

If you build a single page web app by just using jQuery, then it gets very difficult. The framework is not required for complete operations, standard Javascript libraries are quite capable of doing those; BUT they're so capable that pretty soon you'll have built a pile of jQuery call-backs. A framework is important to give a structure to your application.

Single page applications are the future of web. Backbone.js enforces that communication to the server through a RESTful API. The API route is being taken by most of the web since the browser is not the only client nowadays; you have mobiles, tablets, Google Goggles and all kinds of appliances.

Where is AngularJS Used

For the amount of functionality and structure that Backbone provides, it has a very small library. It is MVC for the client and allows you to make your code modular. Due to its light nature, you can include Backbone in current as well as for future projects.

Some prominent applications that have been built using Backbone.JS include – Sony Entertainment Network, Del.icio.us.
